Memorial Day Message from Supervisor V. Manuel Perez

May 25, 2026

Around the Fourth District, across the state, around the country, and overseas, we pause and gather today to remember our fallen veterans. Their lives and their impact will never be forgotten.

A few days ago, I had the privilege of congratulating students from our local high schools for their achievements as Students of the Year. Given some time to address the students, their families and teachers, I thought it was important to share a message that each student has the responsibility to give back to their community, their families and, ultimately, their country.

I reminded each Student of the Year of their obligation to honor their families, their communities, but as well, the many soldiers that paid the ultimate sacrifice for their freedom and education. Thus, the significance of Memorial Day, which goes back to the Civil War, and how over 620,000 soldiers from the north and south died fighting in what was a war that tore our country apart between the years of 1861 to 1865.

Fortunately, none of us have had to live through those tumultuous times. However, it is a time in our history that cannot be forgotten and should always be remembered.

In summary, this Memorial Day, let us be thankful for all our blessings and for all those men and women who have lost their lives so that we can be free. Have a thoughtful day of remembrance, reflection and purpose to ensure that we live up to the expectations of living free in our beautiful democracy.
