Deadline Extended to October 1 for North Shore Families Seeking Replacement Food Benefits

NORTH SHORE – North Shore residents whose food was destroyed during a prolonged power outage that occurred August 30 to September 3 may receive replacement food benefits through the CalFresh program, administered by the Riverside County Department of Public Social Services (DPSS). North Shore residents have until October 1 to report food losses, an extension from the September 30 date announced previously.

NORTH SHORE – North Shore residents whose food was destroyed during a prolonged power outage that occurred August 30 to September 3 may receive replacement food benefits through the CalFresh program, administered by the Riverside County Department of Public Social Services (DPSS). North Shore residents have until October 1 to report food losses, an extension from the September 30 date announced previously.

DPSS staff and Supervisor V. Manuel Perez’s staff will be at the North Shore Beach & Yacht Club Community Center from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. today and tomorrow, September 28 and September 29, to help North Shore residents get their food replacement benefits. The North Shore Beach & Yacht Club Community Center is located in North Shore, 99-155 Sea View Dr.

The CalFresh program can offer replacement food benefits to North Shore households that were impacted by the power outage. To qualify, the household must already be a CalFresh recipient, have encountered a food loss directly resulting from the power outage, and report their food losses to DPSS.

“Our hearts go out to the families and individuals who experienced losses from this outage,” said Allison Gonzalez, assistant director of Self Sufficiency Services for Riverside County DPSS. “Local households have a lot to focus on, and we don’t want them to worry about where their next meal is coming from when we are here to help.”

Customers can report their food losses by phone to Riverside County DPSS at 1-877-410-8827. Customers may also report in-person at the two community outreach events this week at the North Shore Beach & Yacht Club Community Center, at the department’s Mecca Family & Farmworker Service Center (located at 91-275 Avenue 66, Mecca) and Coachella office (1283 Sixth Street, Coachella), by fax, or by mail.

Reports made to DPSS by October 1 for the North Shore power outage are considered timely.

“I am grateful, through this program, that Riverside County is able to further help families in North Shore who lost the food they had in their refrigerators during the power outage,” said Supervisor Perez. “I encourage everyone to report their food losses by October 1 for replacement CalFresh benefits. Thank you to our county departments and all our partners who continually provide resources, relief and hope in response to natural disasters.”

Customers not already receiving CalFresh who were affected by this disaster and may need food assistance are encouraged to submit CalFresh applications to DPSS or online at GetCalFresh.org.

Supervisor V. Manuel Perez represents the eastern two-thirds of Riverside County on the Riverside County Board of Supervisors. Stretching from Palm Springs and Desert Hot Springs, south to the Salton Sea and east to Blythe and the Colorado River, the 4th District is the largest geographical district in the county.
