Supervisor Perez offers the following statement on the passing of Hunter Lopez, a Desert Sands Unified graduate from Indio and U.S. Marine, and Kareem Nikoui, a U.S. Marine from Norco, who were among 13 U.S. service members killed in a bomb attack near the entrance to Afghanistan’s international airport in Kabul on Thursday:

“Our hearts ache for the Lopez and Nikoui families on the loss of their sons, Hunter Lopez and Kareem Nikoui, who perished while staying behind to help Americans, allies and fellow service members evacuate to safety. They lost their lives in service to our country and to humankind. This is devastating to our nation and to Riverside County, and our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of these two heroes.

“During this difficult time, we pray for our nation and the safety of our military.”

In memory of the U.S. service members killed in the Kabul bombing, the American flag, state flag and the POW/MIA flag are being flown at half-staff at all county‑owned and leased facilities.
