PALM DESERT – Local restaurateurs who would like to learn more about a county program to provide and deliver meals to senior citizens are encouraged to participate in a Webinar on Thursday.

Supervisor V. Manuel Perez and the Riverside County Office on Aging are hosting a Zoom meeting at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 28 to provide information and answer questions about Riverside County’s Great Plates Delivered program.

The Great Plates Delivered program provides payment to restaurants that prepare and deliver three meals per day, seven days a week, to at-risk senior citizens at their homes. The county is recruiting restaurants to participate and serve a growing list of senior citizens signed up to receive meals.

“Great Plates Delivered provides service to senior citizens and helps the restaurant industry,” said Supervisor Perez. “I am very proud that this effort was piloted in the Coachella Valley, paving the way for a successful program for the county and state. We want to further expand Great Plates Delivered throughout the valley, out to Blythe, and across our county, as well as diversify the program to provide a greater variety of meals for our residents. I encourage restaurants to consider being involved in this wonderful program.”

The Webinar will guide restaurants through the program requirements and the process of becoming a provider with the county.

In late April, California Governor Gavin Newsom initiated a statewide restaurant meal delivery program to support vulnerable older Californians who are staying at home.

The “Great Plates Delivered” program is Riverside County’s program to implement this first in the nation program. The program is administered by the Riverside County Office on Aging. Seventy five percent of the funding is from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, with the balance from state and county sources.

Riverside County’s Great Meals Delivered program launched April 29. Norma’s Italian Kitchen in Rancho Mirage was the first restaurant in Riverside County to begin deliveries. The program currently has 16 restaurants across the county participating, providing meals to eligible Great Plates clients.
